The introduction will include a description of Universal Design (UD), including why different titles are used; a brief history of UD; the “principles” of UD; comparisons between the ADA and UD; how and under what circumstances can UD be applied to a historic building; and how do the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards affect the application of Universal Design. Lastly, an approach to rehabilitating a building using Universal Design will be presented. A case study will then be presented by architects who have successfully accomplished the use of Universal Design in historic buildings or sites.
